Elements of the finest schools in a school run by parents

MANILA, Philippines – While teachers take the place of parents in thousands of schools all over the country, none offer the kind of pedagogy that schools under the Parents for Education Foundation (PAREF) possess. These are schools run by no other than the parents themselves. With a firm resolve, they formed PAREF in 1976, a non-stock, non-profit corporation, whose main objective is to put up schools and to provide parents the means to promote the world-class education they dreamed for their children.

Dreaming of leaders who can bring about social transformation, PAREF focuses its efforts on building men and women of character.

“Members of the alumni,” reported Ralph Guzman of PAREF-Southridge School, “are just about always bumping into co-alumni at the University of the Philippines, the Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, University of Asia and the Pacific, and the University of Santo Tomas.” Indeed PAREF students continue to enter Ivy League schools such as Harvard, Brown, Yale, and Stanford, even earning Latin honors of summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude. Within its 35 years, the system has produced at least ten summa cum laudes, six of them in American universities. Thus, the University of the Philippines and some DepEd officials have informed PAREF that its student results show that it is one of the top school systems in the country.

For PAREF, its strongest tool for facilitating personal excellence is one-on-one mentoring. Each child is assigned to one mentor, a member of the school personnel, who chats on a periodic basis with the student personally to understand his or her personality, behavior and potential. Inspired by the ideas of a modern saint and Catholic educator, Josemaria Escriva, PAREF is the first organization in the Philippines to practice this type of active partnership between parents and teachers.               

Building on this key strength, PAREF has developed its home-school collaboration system through the years. The latest addition is the incorporation of Harvard-Business-School-style case studies in its New Parents Education Program (NPEP), developed together with Educhild Foundation.

The faculty is considered the heart of the school. Thus, PAREF ensures that its teachers are fit for the purpose of being parent partners outside the home.

Maximo, a Springdale alumnus to join 50-day camp in Korea


Igi Maximo is a PAREF Springdale Alumnus and former SBO President.

After leading Cebu MultiSport to the team title in the Cobra 70.3 Ironman 70.3 mixed relay division, 18-year-old Cebuano junior cyclist Luis Miguel “Igimax” Maximo, will represent the country in the UCI World Cycling Center Satellite Training Camp on September 2 to October 20 in South Korea.

Pinoy karatekas dominate World Shoto Cup with total of 18 golds

DESPITE a slow finish in the last day of competition, the Philippines still emerged on top in the 2nd International Shotokan Karatedo Federation (ISKF) World Shoto Cup 2012 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

Cebuano national team member Orencio “Oj” delos Santos was the lone individual gold medalist in the adult competition yesterday as he topped the men’s individual kata. The Philippines added another gold after its seniors men’s team lorded the kata/kumite event by beating the United States of America (USA).

Even with just two golds in the last day, the Philippines came out on top as it finished with a total of 18 gold medals, most of which came from the victories by its junior karatekas last Saturday. The Pinoys also had 15 silvers and nine bronze medals after the two-day quadrennial competition.

Rhoel Parungao added a silver medal after placing second to Paul Mckeena of Canada in the senior men’s individual kata while the women’s kumite team settled for third.

Inaugural champion USA bagged a total of six golds and nine silver medals to go with 15 bronze medals.

The USA topped the seniors women’s individual kata and kumite,  team kata and kumite, the men’s individual kumite, women’s individual kata and men’s team kata yesterday.

Canada finished with four gold medals for third place. It also had seven silver and bronze medals.

“I would like to give the credit to our junior karatekas. Because of them, the Philippines finished on top and won the overall championship title,” said ISK Philippines director and national team head coach David Lay. “ It’s the strong basic foundation that made them formidable against bigger junior karatekas from USA, Canada and South Africa.”

Team Philippines will try to defend its title when the competition heads to South Africa in 2016.

Lay is now looking for a generous sponsors from the private sector to help fund the team’s campaign in South Africa.

Titans win as PSDL hoop kicks off

THE PAREF Springdale Titans escaped the San Isidro Parish School Tamaraws, 39-30, at the start of the Private Schools Developmental League (PSDL) yesterday at the J Centre Mall in Mandaue City.

The win tagged the Titans as the first winners in the elementary division of the tournament, which pits teams from private schools that are not part of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc..

The other games in the elementary division were being played as of press time. The tournament also features secondary competition.

A total of 11 private schools converged yesterday to grace the opening of the second year of the hoopfest. This year’s tournament is supported by ThreeSixty Pharmacy, J Centre Mall, Cebu Doctors’ University and Nature’s Spring Water.

“For now, we are focusing on basketball. But we are planning to add other sports in the future,” said tournament director Marlove Alquizar. “We are doing this because we want to develop the skills of other teams in order for them to also excel.”

The tournament was supposed to have 12 teams but Saint Paul College backed out.  The other competing schools are defending champion PAREF Springdale, San Isidro Parish School, Cebu Cherish School, Center For International Education, Living World Christian Learning Center, Mandaue Christian School, Marrian Childhood Education Center, Mount Olives Christian Academy, Saint Francis of Assisi School, Saint Louis School of Mandaue and the Philippine Christian Gospel School./CORRESPONDENT DALE G. Tonyo Carcel wins Kartzone KT100 expert

CEBU, Philippines – Even after all the misfortunes that he went through, Juan Antonio “Tonyo” Carcel kept his composure to win the premiere KT expert division of 2012 Kartzone Superkart Series—fourth leg at Kartzone in Kasambagan, this city over the weekend.

During the qualifying round, Carcel posted 33.525 seconds behind Joseph Rojo who clocked 33.398 seconds while JT Gullas posted 33.609 in wet conditions.

Even with a good position at the start of first heat, Carcel despite his vast experience in karting said that having the wrong gearing caused him trouble.

Carcel finished fourth behind Joseph Rojo at the end of the initial heat.

In the ensuing heat, Carcel had a bad start and got stuck behind a few karters in the back of the pack.

“I was able to overtake them later on already and finished at fifth,” said Carcel to The Freeman.

Looking back at it, Carcel’s second heat performance was actually his best lap time of the latest battle at 28.491 clocking on a damp race track.

The second heat saw Jette Calderon coming out on top followed by Sean Velasco, Joseph Rojo, JT Gullas and Carcel that made the final heat anybody’s game.

“I didn’t think I would end up winning,” added Carcel who started fifth in the final heat following their placing in the second heat.

But as real Titan, the senior high school student of Paref-Springdale Carcel poured everything he got, never gave up the fight and worked his way up.

With a good start, Carcel saw himself behind Sean Velasco after the first turn and he eventually outmaneuvered Veloso after two laps.

Carcel never looked back from there and won the 25-lap action.

He posted a total time of 11:54.791, followed by Jette Calderon who was 2.231 seconds behind the former and Sean Velasco at third spot.

Carcel’s day came out complete knowing his sister, Kali also got into the podium after coming second in the novice class won the Vince Rojo.

Panpan Reroma also grabbed part of the limelight after outsmarting Regan King for the masters’ division title. — THE FREEMAN

Gandionco, Springdale Alumus conquered Torrey Pines

CEBU’s top junior golfer Gio Gandionco scored a huge round on Day 3 to advance to the final round of the Callaway Junior World Golf Championship yesterday in San Diego, California.

Gandionco scored a round of 70—the best of the day for his division—that gave him the ticket to the final round of the tournament that started last Wednesday and played in different venues in San Diego.

His Day 3 exploits put Gandionco in the record books.

“He is the first Cebuano ever to make the cut in Class A in Torrey Pines South,” Cebu Country Club teammate Jovi Neri told Sun.Star Cebu.

Neri added that Gandionco had scored below 70 many times before. “But to score 70 in a course like that in Torrey Pines South against the best junior players in the world, that is something,” Neri said.

Torrey Pines South is a top golf course that hosted the US Open in 2008, where Tiger Woods won his last major tournament.

“I played the best round of my life. I conquered Torrey Pines. Although the tournament hasn’t ended yet, I will not forget my round today. One of my best games (yet),” Gandionco posted on Twitter.

Gandionco’s round was highlighted with an eagle shot from 81 yards to put him in 13th place.

Another Cebuano bet , Lj Go, missed the cut, while Lois Kaye Go finished in 61st place in the 13-14 girls division.

Forming character

ONE of the important goals of education is to form the character of children. It is that part of a person that provides stability and direction in his life and everything in it, starting with the way one thinks, his attitudes and his reactions to things in general.

A person, of course, is a very dynamic being, but he needs to have a sense of permanence and confidence. He needs to be rooted and moored in some sound foundations and oriented to some clear and good goals. He just cannot be drifting aimlessly, twisting in the wind.

A person needs to have an over-all view of life. He has to have a good idea of where he comes from and where he is supposed to go. He has to find meaning and purpose in everything. In fact, he has to know what man is really all about. In this, he cannot and should not be left in the dark for long.

Thus, we have to feel the need to be clear about who and what we are. This involves our core beliefs and faith. Let’s try to be professional and serious about this, avoiding being amateurish and sophomoric. And so we have to understand that we have to be committed to a global view of man and life.

For this, our Christian faith gives us the whole thing—from man’s creation to his eternal destiny. We have to be wary of some attractive ideologies that offer partial truths that often get distorted and exploited for some ulterior motives.

In short, we have to be committed to our Christian faith, for it contains the whole truth and mystery of man, and goes much further than any man-made ideology can offer. Commitment to our Christian faith should not remain on the intellectual level only. It has to involve our whole life with all our powers and faculties.

So everyone has to work to form the right character for oneself and for others. With respect to the children,  the task is a long, tedious process that has to go in several stages, typically slow, even meandering, in accordance to the rhythm of life itself, but it should be abiding and relentless.

Good knowledge on shifting gears is definitely a necessity here, since we are going to meet all kinds of terrains, challenges, circumstances and other factors and conditionings.

Since children are not aware of the need to form their own character, their parents and teachers have to gradually make them aware of it. In the end, it is the children themselves who are the primary agents in forming their own character.

The responsibility of the parents and teachers is undoubtedly big and indispensable, but at best secondary. To the children, parents are the primary educators. Teachers just help. Both need to coordinate very closely with each other.

For sure, they need to make time for this all-important duty. This cannot be treated as a sideline only. They need time to be with the children, and time for their planning and meetings.

For this reason, parents and teachers should be clear about what is involved in forming the character of the children. They have to know what education is really all about.

Then, of course, they have to know the many, endless details of the techniques and methods involved, when to be strict, when to be lenient, etc. They have to realize then that they need formation themselves and that their formation as educators also has to go on. It should be an endless affair.

For sure, education just cannot be understood as imparting some knowledge and skills to the children. It covers a whole lot more. Many considerations have to be made—the temperament and psychology of the children, the close monitoring of their behavior, etc.

As educators, parents and teachers have to be knowledgeable not only about the subjects involved in education, but also about the appropriate ways to educate children. They need to combine a wide range of qualities—patience, cheerfulness, toughness, optimism, naturalness, openness and flexibility, etc.

They have to be good at motivating, since children respond so favorably to this that we can say that their growth and development would depend largely on the motivation they receive especially from parents and children.

They have to feel appreciated and loved, needed and important. Even when they have to be corrected, they should realize by the way we do the correction that they are in fact loved and needed, never rejected.

This, I think, is how they form their character and acquire both human and Christian maturity.

Back to Springdale

As "the only school for boys", today is the first day in school at PAREF Springdale. Teachers, staffs, and students are excited. Everyone is excited especially the new ones. You see new faces, new smiles, hear new laughter, and new kids playing at the quadrangle. For more than 16 years already as a boys school here in Cebu…

Relucio, Pursuing excellence

“I have always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” Parents, teachers, school administration, members of the school board, guests, and the graduating class of 2012, good evening.

This powerful quote from the greatest basketball player of all time-Michael Jordan- – is what inspires me and Batch 2012 to strive for excellence in everything that we do, be it a simple or daunting task.

Take this speech for example. When I actually started writing it, I found out that it’s even harder to do than our Research Paper. Yet, one thing was certain though. I knew that the reason why I made it here today is that I never gave up in pursuing excellence. A line from the movie, “Three Idiots”, gave me the inspiration I needed. It goes, “Pursue excellence and success will just follow.”

So, it looks like… this is it! Finally, we have made it to the end of high school and I, personally, am very thankful to be part of this batch. As we are all gathered here to commemorate this important milestone in our lives, let us savor the fruits of our efforts. Without you guys, I wouldn’t be here and so this speech is not only mine, but yours as well.

Many consider us the best batch that Springdale has seen so far. We have heard it several times in elementary, only to hear the same thing again all throughout high school. And so with this, we went out to fulfill what everyone had expected of us. It propelled us to work harder and excel in academics, sports, and other extracurricular activities. Majority of us are on the director’s list, but… we’re not just a bunch of nerds. Almost everyone in the batch is part of the varsity and we have reaped numerous awards in soccer, basketball, taekwondo, debate, golf, swimming, cycling and even scrabble. That is what makes our batch truly amazing.

And guess what? We are also known as the guinea pigs of the school. Because of our high performance, we were always the first ones to try new things, like when they needed to change the curriculum. We didn’t see it as something bad because it just showed how much the school believed in us, making us a benchmark for other batches to emulate. And when we graduate, they will probably say things like “look at this batch and how much they have achieved.” Yes, these are just a few of our accomplishments that will definitely go down in Springdale history.

All these would not have been possible if not for those people who have been instrumental in helping us become what we are today: Our beloved parents and teachers. Our parents for their unwavering love and constant support, and our teachers for their deep wells of patience. In all our struggles, our parents have continued to serve as our guiding light to keep us going and stay focused on our goals. Without them, we might have gotten lost along the way.

Our heartfelt gratitude also goes out to all our teachers who have painstakingly handled our batch throughout the years. The experience we had during our Chemistry exhibits, when we were tasked to teach younger kids who did nothing but run around, made us realize how difficult it must be to be a teacher, especially to high school students who sometimes act like Grade 1 pupils.

Our teachers, together with our parents, have also instilled in us the love for God who makes all things possible. Nothing would have come to fruition without him. For all these, we cannot indeed, thank you enough.

Although we will be travelling different roads, hopefully, we will one day meet again and share new experiences and take pride in our lofty pursuits. Perhaps we will meet as Springdale parents. One of us may even be the chaplain of the school, or some may be influential business leaders in the community.

But no matter what path we take, we will forever be grateful for the wealth of experience that Springdale has provided for us. It has been a pleasure spending the last four years in high school with all of you. And because of the endless support from our parents and teachers, the hard work and never giving up on our goals, we have been better prepared for greater responsibilities ahead.
